When I began using handmade paints, I was hesitant to adopt them fully in my practice because I wasn’t comfortable with the feeling of the paint that is left on the paper. Instead of smooth watercolour that is absorbed into paper, these paints tend to sit on top of the paper and leave a slightly coarse texture behind. As I continued to explore different options for more natural art supplies, I found myself being drawn to these particular paints more and more. The colours are vibrant and, though they behave differently than commercial watercolours, I am very happy with the way they create a variety of marks and can be manipulated even after they have been laid down on the surface. This has been such a nice surprise and I’m grateful that I didn’t give up. My favourites are Beam Paints (Canadian), Case for Making, and Natural Earth Paints (which I mix myself).
